Brain Storm............Staff Training

Any ideas on staff training?
How do I train my staff in relation to their own time and how dose this work? As in do we have to pay them?
Always a tricky subject?

As I type this all our staff are at a training course at Newcastle (about an hour away) We pay for the course or their time (they choose the course as it's usualy the most expensive, it goes from 6pm to 9pm, tomorrow Dana is taking 1 staff member to an advanced training course (same deal) but each staff member must produce an out come, we expect for each dollar we spend we should get a return of $5.00, This is hard to achieve a lot of the time. what we do, the staff that achieve the highest turn over from previous training get to go to the advanced courses with Dana and dinner is supplied up to $50.00 (usualy cost about $30.) Its funny our 2nd year apprentice is the one on the charge at the moment currently she is on par or better than our internationaly experienced senior (the one that has worked in the big London salons) so I know which one is better bang for my buck. We are lucky we have Goldwell as the amount of training in salon out salon and advanced education is second to none (and a lot of it is FREE!!!)
Well that's my bit for the night!

Regards
Murray

Firstly, how fantstic that you want to train your staff. So many salons have high expectations of staff but arent commited to train them. After hours training is always a tricky one. Yes legally you need to pay them but its a very "grey"area. If its sending staff to courses i pay for all hairdressing skills courses and doc half a days time.I rely on good service from my professional companies-Loreal,Goldwell-for product knowlege sessions. If its me doing the training after hours-i would try and start at 4 and go through for a few hours. i wanted to do it once a week but i always got excuses in regards to finding models-sport commitments and life stuff so we all got together and decided that fortnightly between feb-oct was fair. As far as payment my staff were rewarded well(not always $$) and they were commited. Once i organised a muso to come and play an accustic set while we trained..staff loved that. Always supply dinner suprise picnic hampers and taxi fares to young apprentices so mum didnt have to pick them up. It woked well. I now teach apprentices and can really see the difference between apprentices that have training and those that dont but would love salons to train in what is going on in the apprentices RTO training as well as salon needs. They struggle now that their apprenticship is 3 yrs. Cheers
