your opinion?

Hi all.. just wanting to hear some of your opinions..

So i currently am working for a salon that just don't seem to take things seriously..

We have 8 work stations, 3 basins & 1 beauty room.

We used to have a beauty therapist but she didn't make enough so they got rid of her. Now my self & one other girl as well as our hairdressing duties do eye brow waxing etc.
They have no intention of hiring another beauty therapist but keep talking about putting spray tanning into the salon using a pop up tent.

My opinion is it is not worth while as we don't have the space, there is a specialist tanning salon down the road that has a great name, cheap price and many different shades. I don't see it as worth while unless we can be competitive.. to be competitive to others prices we would not be making enough for it to be worth while..

Our salon is also very poorly ventilated with nothing but the front glass door.. i would imagine that even with a pop up tanning tent there would still be a lot of fumes.

Then i move onto who would be doing the spray tans??

I refuse as i do not like nudity, don't want to see my clients naked, I'm a hairdresser not a beautician, Our boss is entirely to busy to fit spray tanning into her day at all, our other senior is only there casually & that only leaves our 3rd year apprentice who needs to focus all her time on learning hair & building her clientel.

so obviously you can all tell I'm less than fussed by this idea & have debated all my opinions with the bosses who don't listen to them..

just want to know if anyone else thinks I'm right... or wrong..

I really want to work for a salon that is professional & absolutely dedicated to doing hair.. not just client wise..

I really want to do more comps.. i want to WIN comps :P

i don't mind doing eye brow waxes here and there because i know i'm good at it.. but i don't want to touch spray tans.. i think they are icky anways.. i'll keep my ghostly paleness..

We have had beauty in our salons (renting rooms) but we have asked them all to leave (our loss in rent) as they didn't do us any favours with clientel they would only be open when they wanted which wasnt often one of the girls was always having boyfriend or accomidation problems and would dissapear in the middle of the day.
when we have 30 clients a day with about 25% wanting a beauty service and us having to say sorry they have gone home, it reflected badly on our business clients didn't see there were two business under one roof and it just made us look bad. We are known for doing the best colour on the coast so we stick to what we do best, it's a tough industry to start with so why slit your own throat.

P.S if Pamala Anderson comes in for a spray tan just give me a call, I dont think nudity would bother me!!

we all have to do things that we do not like, I remember as an apprentice cutting nose hair for the first time, FREAK ME OUT! Not to mention ear hair, EVEN WORSE. Im not sure how I would have coped with spray taning nude clients.
May advice is find a salon that reflects where you want to be in the industry and go for it! Remember the grass is not always greener on the other side, so do your research well.

You have been lucky to get a foot in the door at your salon, so use it as a positive steeping stone!

Cheers
Belle
