Newbie - Hi, I'm Aliya

Hi everyone,

My name is Aliya, I live in Brisbane and will be starting my apprenticeship early next year.

My interest in hairdressing came a little late in life, I'm 25 and have been working in the insurance industry for the last 8 years, mostly just to pay the bills and let me figure out what I want to do with my life. Now that I've decided hairdressing is the career for me, I'm looking for the right start.

I'm really not sure which salon, I've been keeping an eye out for the larger salons because I've heard that the training is better and I want to learn as much as I can!

Go for Tognini in Brisbane? They're great.

Yes, they seem amazing, I've noticed they've won a few awards as well! Can you tell me if it's usually ok to approach salons for an apprenticeship even if it's not advertised? I'm not sure what the etiquette is.

Definitely approach salons you want to work in!
Call first and ask who is in charge of recruitment?
Write an impressive letter and resume WITH A DIFFERENCE telling that salon why you want to work for them. (Research their web site) (research the industry)
Drop it off in person, well dressed and presented (not on a saturday or Thursday night) and give it to the person in charge of recruitment.
FOLLOW UP!!!!!! a week later in person, and again and again!

There is no standard eticuit, some salons advertise and some never advertise!
My first apprenticeship was not advertised, I harassed them!

yes i didn't reply to an advertisement to get my apprenticeship i went in and asked about it and then handed in a letter and cv they gave me a casual job there which lead to an apprenticeship
